Literature Text

It wasn't a regular occurrence.
There was no particular pattern that he could think of or use to predict when it might happen. It wasn't daily, weekly, or even monthly. It never seemed to be connected in any way. It happened during moments when he was perfectly happy, as well as on occasions when he was sad. It was not intended as an award for anything he might have done, nor was it done out of guilt for any offense.
It was a simple act of kindness…an act of friendship. Nothing more, nothing less.
So, every once in a while, when he least expected it, Matrix would look up from whatever he was doing to find Jex standing there with a small smile and a cup of coffee she'd brought for him.
The coffee was always terrible- over roasted beans with a bitter aftertaste, and with far too much sugar dumped in, which did nothing to disguise it's disgustingness. Matrix had never had the heart to tell her that he didn't like it. Besides, the truth was, in a strange way, he'd actually begun to treasure those horrible cups of coffee.
Every time Jex appeared with a cup, he felt noticed and special, just as he had every time since that first cup when he'd been feeling lonely. So, whenever it happened, Matrix would smile and thank her. He would drink, and actually enjoy every drop of the dreadful beverage as he chatted with Jex.
Then later once they'd parted, Matrix would grin to himself in the knowledge that someday soon, when she least expected it, Jex would find a special treat left on her desk. Nothing fancy, just something for her to enjoy. It might be one of those flakey pastries she was fond of, some fresh fruit, or perhaps a book. But there was no hurry. When the time came, Matrix would know exactly what to get to make Jex smile.
There was nothing extraordinary in these quiet exchanges. There was no hidden meaning or ulterior motives disguised behind these acts. It wasn't a form of flirtation, or a longing for anything more. It was simply the kind of thing that on occasion friends did for each other.
It was what it was. Nothing more, nothing less, and that is precisely what made it so special.
Matrix takes all the awkward floating around the room and exudes it from his own pores, which is why Jex makes such a good friend when he has only a few. He can be coarse, grumpy, and socially awkward, but Jex is willing to look past it. She doesn't pester, she just brings him horrendous coffee when she feels he might like a cup.

EDIT: Holy cow, this got into my school's archive of students works of literary art! -flails around a bit- Not that it was really a selective process I think, but it sets off a warm glow to see it in there (albeit I changed Jex and Matrix's names to something normal and earth-y |D)
